Every four years the top 32 national soccer teams travel to the host country to compete in a month-long tournament, with the winner being crowned soccer’s, or “football’s”, world champion. FIFA chooses a host country, who then spends years and billions of dollars preparing to host the world’s most popular sport. It’s a massive financial risk, but it can also have long-term positive outcomes. In 2022, Qatar spent a record amount of money on infrastructure to prepare as the host country. But, multiple human rights concerns have been raised. Maggie and Jaden investigate what the World Cup can teach us about opportunity cost, human rights, ethics, and a country’s thought process in deciding to host events of this magnitude, on the world stage.
