BU is a web/cloud-based learning management system. BU provides a suite of learning management tools. Subscribers can access BU through a free trial account. Students and Subscribers can access BU through the Subscriber’s account/license.
Visitors: IP Addresses, Operating System, Browser Type, and Referring URLs are tracked with our Website logs. This information is collected for security purposes and is no way used to detect the user’s identification.
Free Trial Visitors: For teachers signing up for a free trial account, they are required to provide us with an email address, first and last name, city, state, and organization (school/site name). This information will be used to 1) send emails for Teacher Dashboard set up instructions, 2) reply to any questions you may have, and/or 3) send you information about new products and/or promotions. We do not sell or share our email listings to outside companies for any reason.
Subscribers: Subscribers (usually a school/district/teacher) are required to provide email, first name, last name, city, state, and organization (school/site name). This information is necessary so that we may 1) send emails for Teacher Dashboard set up instructions, 2) reply to any questions you may have, 3) send you information about new products and/or promotions, and/or 4) in some cases, we may need to send you information about scheduled application server maintenance or other support matters. We do not sell or share any of this information to outside companies for any reason. The following Personal Information that may be optionally entered by Subscribers includes: gender, birthday, phone number, and address.
Students: Students gain access to secure application servers using a password protected ID provided to them by their Subscriber (teacher). We collect information about the Student’s session such as content visited, time on task, and assessment scores. This information is collected and organized to help the Subscriber make observations to improve the learning process. To that end, the Subscriber may optionally enter Student names on the servers. These procedures and technologies are to improve the Student learning process and are in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The following Personal Information may be optionally entered by Students: First and last name, email address, city, state, and birthday.
Additional Information: Subscriber and Student data is the only information gathered. Once a subscription expires, this data is archived on BU’s secure severs in the event the Subscriber re-subscribes in the future, and wants access to the stored data. If the Subscriber or school/site desires this information to be permanently deleted, the Subscriber can email firstname.lastname@example.org and type “delete stored data” in the subject area, and include your Techer ID that was issued by BU. If a Subscriber, parent or eligible Student desires to challenge the accuracy of the Student or Subscriber data being gathered, the school or Subscriber can email email@example.com and formally inquire.
Under age 13: BU requires schools, districts, and/or Subscribers (teachers/instructors) (on behalf of the parents or legal guardians of Students under the age of 13) to provide consent for the online collection of personal information of the Student under the age of 13 through BU. In order to use BU, Students must gain access credentials provided to them by their Subscriber (teacher).
BU collects limited personal information from minor Students only where that Student’s school, district, and/or Subscriber has contracted with BU to collect personal information for the use and benefit of the learning environment. This information is not shared outside of the school or with any third parties except those needed for the provision of the service as outlined in this policy. Students of any age cannot share their profiles publicly outside of their classroom or school.
Subscribers can give Students grades, and provide comments to Students. Students can submit assignments, take quizzes, and upload additional work. Subscribers and Students can record audio and/or video recordings and upload/attach these recordings to our system. None of this information is shared with any third parties without proper consent.
For the purpose of improving and enhancing its service, BU collects and analyzes data on how the system is used in the aggregate (how groups of people use BU). As true of most Web Sites, we gather certain information automatically and store it in log files. This information may include internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring/exit pages, operating system, date/time stamp, and/or clickstream data. We also use tracking technologies from third party service providers to gather information regarding the date and time of visits and the information interacted with. We may link this automatically-collected data to personally identifiable information. We do not share this information with third parties.
Information on individual usage of the system, including but not limited to individual IP addresses, may be analyzed on a case-specific basis to resolve a technical difficulty or to assist in resolving or investigating any misuse of the service. Such individual usage information may be furnished to your Subscriber if your Subscriber requests such information to assist in the investigation of fraudulent, abusive, or criminal activity or any other use of BU that violates your Subscriber’s rules or policies.
Cookies, Beacons, and other Similar Technologies: Technologies such as cookies, beacons, tags and scripts are used by BU and our tracking utility partners who provide online customer support and video management. These technologies are used to make it easier for you to navigate our site, to store your passwords so you don’t have to enter it more than once, analyzing trends, administering the site, tracking users’ movements throughout the site and to gather demographic information about our user base as a whole. We may receive reports based on the use of these technologies by these companies on an individual as well as aggregated basis.
Local Storage Objects: We use Local Storage Objects (LSOs) such as HTML5 Local Storage/IndexDB, etc. to store content information and preferences. Third parties with whom we partner to provide certain features on our site or to display advertising for BU on other sites based upon your Web browsing activity use LSOs such as HTML5 or Flash to collect and store information. Various browsers may offer their own management tools for removing HTML5 LSOs.
Parents have the right to refuse the use of the site for their child. Parents can access their child’s information and request to have it deleted by contacting their Subscriber.
We will retain your Student’s information for as long as the account is active or archived, or as needed to provide services. We will retain and use the information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.
3rd Party Information Dissemination: BU does not share or sell customer, visitor, Subscriber, or Student information to 3rd parties.

Because we cannot control the activities of third parties, we cannot accept responsibility for any use of your personally identifiable information by such third parties, and we cannot guarantee that they will adhere to the same privacy practices as businessu.org. We encourage you to review the privacy statements of any other service provider from whom you request services. If you visit a third-party website that is linked to the businessu.org site, you should read that site’s privacy statement before providing any personally identifiable information.
